Cleveland Heights took home the outright LEL championship and secured a postseason berth with a 21-12 win over host Maple Heights on Nov. 1.
It was the ninth consecutive win for the Tigers, who also swept through league play for the title. Heights earned a playoff spot in Division I, Region 1 and is projected to play top seed Mentor in Week 11.
“January of this year we set a goal to be LEL champs and qualify for the playoffs in the state’s toughest region,” Heights coach Mac Stephens said. “The players and staff did a great job in getting the team prepared for Maple Heights and because of the effort put forth by all we came out victorious against a well-coached team in Maple Heights.”
Justin Wodtly and Bay Harvey each had short TD runs to help the Tigers jump out to a 14-0 halftime lead.
After the Mustangs got to within 14-6, Harvey punched it in again on a short run for a much-needed fourth-quarter cushion of 15 points.
Nick McGhee sealed the victory with a late interception.
“We are looking forward to preparing for Round 1 of the playoffs because at this time of the year anything can happen,” Stephens said.
